British tourist arrested in Antalya after spitting on Turkish flag

A 58-year-old British tourist was arrested in Türkiye's southern Antalya province after spitting on a Turkish flag displayed in the lobby of a hotel following an argument with staff.

Stephen Kerr, who was staying at a hotel in Alanya's Dinek neighborhood, reportedly got into an argument with employees for an unknown reason before spitting on the flag hanging in the lobby.

Hotel staff hold tourist until police arrive

Hotel employees held Kerr following the incident and alerted police.

Officers from the Alanya Police Department's Security Bureau arrived at the hotel and took him into custody.

Kerr later gave his statement at the district police headquarters with the assistance of an interpreter before being sent to the Alanya Courthouse.

Court orders arrest over insult to state symbols

After the legal proceedings, a criminal judgeship of peace ordered Kerr's arrest on a charge of "insulting the symbols of the state's sovereignty."

He was subsequently sent to Alanya L-Type Closed Prison.
