President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump, during which the two leaders discussed relations between Türkiye and the United States as well as regional and global developments.
Erdogan said Türkiye will keep working to strengthen ties with Washington and to give cooperation momentum in every field. He noted that the two countries will mark the 100th anniversary of their relations next year.
Erdogan told Trump that the Mecca Joint Defense Alliance is closely following developments in the Strait of Hormuz and in Yemen. He said the alliance is making efforts to resolve the issues through diplomacy.
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway at the mouth of the Persian Gulf and one of the world’s most important routes for oil shipments. Yemen has been in civil war since 2014.
On the war in Ukraine, Erdogan said Türkiye is ready to support efforts to revive the diplomatic process between Kyiv and Moscow and to end the war through that route. Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.
Trump congratulated Erdogan and the Turkish people on Republic Day, which Türkiye marks on October 29 in memory of the republic’s proclamation in 1923. He also conveyed his wishes for a successful Organization of Turkic States summit. The organization brings together Türkiye and several Turkic-speaking countries in Central Asia and the Caucasus.
