President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hosted Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Libyan Government of National Unity Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh on Friday at Dolmabahce Working Office in Istanbul for the Türkiye-Italy-Libya Cooperation Summit, aimed at boosting regional coordination and trilateral ties.

Erdogan urges multilateral approach to migration crisis

Erdogan stressed the importance of trilateral collaboration in addressing shared challenges, particularly irregular migration. He said sustainable solutions must target root causes and require broad international coordination.

He also condemned Israel’s ongoing offensive in Gaza, describing the situation as a humanitarian tragedy.

Erdogan said the international community bore a significant responsibility to secure an immediate cease-fire and deliver humanitarian aid. He reiterated Türkiye’s call for a sovereign, geographically contiguous Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on the 1967 borders.

The summit concluded with an agreement to convene cooperation committees. The leaders will reconvene after reviewing the committees’ outcomes.

Libya highlights economic integration, security

Following the summit, the Libyan Government of National Unity issued a statement emphasizing regional cooperation in stability and economic integration. The statement underscored the importance of advancing strategic joint projects across the Mediterranean.

The summit also explored prospects for deeper economic cooperation in energy, oil and gas, infrastructure, port investment, and electrical grid development. It highlighted Libya’s push to connect with wider Mediterranean regional initiatives.

Dbeibeh called for enhanced coordination to combat smuggling networks and other illegal activities. He proposed a four-way ministerial meeting involving Libya, Türkiye, Italy, and Qatar to launch joint projects and address priority issues.

According to the statement, Qatar expressed readiness to contribute to logistical, humanitarian, and technical efforts.

Tripoli operations aimed at 'restoring state control'

Dbeibeh also commented on recent security operations in Tripoli, saying their goal was to dismantle illegal armed groups undermining state authority and blackmailing institutions.

“These are not temporary operations,” the statement noted. “Prime Minister Dbeibeh underlined that the operations in Tripoli represent a clear political and security choice aimed at restoring the state’s authority and establishing institutions operating within the framework of law, free from tutelage or threats.”

He added that eliminating parallel power structures would help enforce national policies on migration and border control.
