President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Sunday that Türkiye is in contact with both Russia and Ukraine to help end the war and restore peace, emphasizing that Ankara prioritizes security in the Black Sea.
Speaking in the Black Sea city of Trabzon, Erdogan voiced hope that the conflict, now approaching its fourth anniversary, would end “as soon as possible.”
“Ankara is in contact with both Russia and Ukraine to stop the war and establish peace,” he said, pledging Türkiye’s readiness to do “whatever is necessary” to contribute to the resolution of the conflict.
Turning to the Gaza ceasefire, Erdogan called on Israel to honor its commitments under the newly agreed deal, warning that “a much greater test awaits the Islamic world and humanity.”
He said humanitarian aid shipments to Gaza had accelerated following the agreement and confirmed that aid trucks sent by Türkiye had begun reaching the Palestinian enclave.
Erdogan stressed the urgency of action before winter, saying, “Steps should be taken before winter sets in.
The people of Gaza must be rescued from makeshift shelters,” pledging that Ankara will continue to support the process.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that Israel and Hamas had agreed to the first phase of a 20-point plan he unveiled on Sept. 29, which includes a ceasefire across Gaza, the release of all Israeli captives in exchange for around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the entire Gaza Strip.
The first phase of the agreement entered into force on Friday.
A second phase calls for the creation of a new governing mechanism in Gaza without Hamas, the formation of a multinational peace force, and the disarmament of Hamas.
Since October 2023, Israeli attacks have killed over 67,600 Palestinians, most of them women and children, leaving the enclave uninhabitable, according to local authorities and the United Nations.
