President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump, during which the two leaders reviewed relations between Türkiye and the United States as well as regional and global developments, according to a statement from the Turkish side.
Erdogan said he believes cooperation between Ankara and Washington will continue to grow and that the two sides will work to give relations fresh momentum in the period ahead.
Erdogan said the tension between Iran and the United States should end and that disputes should be settled through diplomacy. He added that Türkiye will keep making efforts for peace.
On the war between Ukraine and Russia, Erdogan said he hopes growing diplomatic efforts to end the conflict will produce positive results. He said Türkiye will continue to contribute to those efforts and stressed the importance of increasing contacts with both Kyiv and Moscow.
Erdogan also thanked Trump for his support for the Organization of Turkic States Summit. The statement gave no further detail on the nature of that support. The organization brings together Türkiye and several Turkic-speaking countries in Central Asia and the Caucasus. It operated as the Turkic Council before adopting its current name in 2021.
The statement did not say when the call took place or whether the leaders agreed on any specific steps. Türkiye, a NATO member since 1952, has maintained contacts with both Russia and Ukraine since the war began.
