Historic 36th NATO Summit reaches its final hours in Ankara

The NATO Summit in Ankara continues on the second day, on Wednesday. The Presidential Complex hosts the leaders and diplomats from more than 30 countries. Political observers have called this summit NATO 3.0, according to the tension between Europe and the U.S.

All eyes were on the president of the U.S., Donald Trump’s statements. He arrived at the complex on Tuesday and answered the journalists’ questions. He said he doesn’t have any hesitations about selling F-35 strike fighters to Türkiye.

Trump also complained about European allies for not participant of Iran War while he was pleasing Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. “If it weren't held in Turkey...it's possible I would not have attended [NATO]. I felt I had to because [Erdogan] has gone all out,” said Trump.

The tension between Trump and Giorgia Meloni, Italian Prime Minister, was also followed closely. Trump said Meloni begged him to have a picture at the G7.

 Meloni responded that “I and Italy never beg”. 

On Monday, one day before the Summit, Trump shared a post on his TruthSocial account written “Restraining order needed” with Meloni’s looking eyes through Trump. Nothing has happened between the two leaders till now.

This Summit was also the latest one for the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Although Starmer has announced his resignation, he will remain legally and officially in office until the Labour Party elects its new leader.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis verbalized his concerns about Turkey's Possible F-35 acquisition at the NATO Summit. “All NATO Allies need to be taken into consideration,” he said.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine, also joined the summit. 

He thanked President Erdogan personally for the invitation. Last week, there were a few Russian attacks on Ukraine’s territory. He stated, “NATO with Ukraine is the alliance for the future.”
