A formal investigation has been launched into Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Deputy Mayor Nuri Aslan on charges of “obstructing public officials from performing their duties,” following his behavior during the fourth wave of the ongoing Istanbul corruption investigation.
During a recent visit to the Istanbul Courthouse in Caglayan, Aslan attempted to enter the building before a court ruling was announced. When he was stopped at a security barrier, he became confrontational. Eyewitnesses reported that Aslan said: “Don’t push me—I'll burn this place down! I’ll resign!”
The latest phase of the corruption probe into IMM has resulted in the arrest of 25 individuals, including KIPTAS Director Ali Kurt, Altan Gozcu, Bulent Yilmaz, Murat Erenler, Nezahat Kurt, Ogun Soytekin, and Serpil Altintas.
Aslan’s incident at the courthouse reportedly took place as he sought information regarding the legal process.
His actions prompted a strong reaction from judicial staff, leading to a criminal complaint.
In light of the events, authorities have opened an investigation into Nuri Aslan for allegedly attempting to prevent public officials from carrying out their duties. Legal proceedings are expected to follow depending on the findings.
Born in 1969, Nuri Aslan completed his primary and secondary education in Istanbul. He graduated from Yildiz Technical University in 1990 with a degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.
He served as a municipal council member in the Kucukcekmece district from 1999 to 2004 and was deputy chair of the Turkish Red Crescent’s Kucukcekmece branch between 2009 and 2017.
Aslan has held several leadership positions in civil society. He was chairman of the Beylikduzu Industrialists and Businesspeople Association (BEYSIAD) from 2014 to 2018 and served on the board of the Istanbul Federation of Industrialists and Businesspeople (ISIFED) from 2014 to 2021.
He also held the role of vice chair at the Koyulhisar and Villages Service Foundation (KODAV) from 2009 to 2020.
Between 2011 and 2019, he was a member of the executive committee of the Beylikduzu City Council.
Aslan was elected to the Beylikduzu Municipal Council and the IMM Council in both the 2019 and 2024 local elections. On April 15, 2024, he was elected First Deputy Speaker of the IMM Council.
