Deadly floods bring Istanbul to standstill

The decision to extend school closures comes after torrential rainfall battered Istanbul on Oct. 14, killing two people and bringing parts of Türkiye's largest city to a standstill.

The flooding left streets submerged, vehicles stranded and homes inundated, while 43 flights attempting to land at Istanbul Airport were diverted to alternative airports. The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) received nearly 7,000 emergency reports, and authorities recorded landslides and dozens of incidents involving stranded residents.

Schools were initially closed on Thursday, Oct. 15, as emergency crews worked to clear flooded roads and restore transportation services. The severe weather also disrupted metro and tram operations, although several lines resumed service Thursday morning.
