Istanbul's D-100 highway, commonly known as the E-5, will be closed to traffic in the Edirne-bound direction for seven hours each night until Oct. 21 as maintenance work gets underway on the Kucukcekmece Viaduct.
According to an announcement by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's (IBB) Transportation Management Center, the closures will take place between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. during the maintenance period scheduled from Oct. 9 to Oct. 21.
Drivers heading toward Edirne, a city in northwestern Türkiye near the Bulgarian border, will be redirected to the D-100 highway's northern service road, where traffic will continue under controlled conditions.
The restrictions are part of a project to replace expansion joints on the Edirne-bound section of the Kucukcekmece Viaduct.
Expansion joints are structural components used in bridges and viaducts to accommodate movement caused by temperature changes, allowing the structure to expand and contract without damage.
The municipality announced the maintenance schedule on Oct. 7, outlining 12 days of overnight traffic arrangements while the replacement work is carried out.
Throughout the closures, motorists traveling through Kucukcekmece at night will need to follow traffic signs and temporary diversions directing vehicles onto the northern service road.
