A moderate earthquake shook western Türkiye on Monday evening, sending tremors across a wide area that included the country's largest city, Istanbul.
The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority reported the quake struck at 9:20 p.m. local time, with its epicenter in Sindirgi, a district in Balikesir province. The agency measured the earthquake at magnitude 4.9.
The tremor was felt in Balikesir and surrounding provinces, as well as in Istanbul, located hundreds of kilometers to the northwest.
The evening's main quake followed earlier seismic activity in the same area. At 6:20 p.m., a magnitude 3.8 earthquake had struck Sindirgi, authorities said.
Following the 4.9 magnitude event, the district experienced continued seismic activity with another tremor measuring 3.6, according to AFAD data.
The succession of earthquakes in Sindirgi represents what seismologists call an earthquake sequence, with multiple events occurring in the same location over a short period.
No immediate reports of damage or casualties were available from authorities in the affected areas.
