A 53-year-old man who served around 15 years in prison in Switzerland for killing his wife has been arrested in southeastern Türkiye after allegedly beating his 85-year-old mother with a wooden stick and his fists, leaving her seriously injured.
The attack took place on Sunday morning in the Turkmenoren neighborhood of Bozova, a district of Sanliurfa province. The suspect, identified as Ibrahim Yaprak, had returned to Türkiye only 10 days earlier and had begun living with his mother, Islim Yaprak.
According to the report, Ibrahim Yaprak repeatedly struck his mother in the garden of her home with a stick and punched her.
Neighbors later took the badly injured woman to Bozova State Hospital, where she was placed under treatment. Her condition was reported to be serious.
Ibrahim Yaprak had previously been imprisoned in Switzerland after strangling his wife. He spent approximately 15 years behind bars before being released.
Following his release, he returned to Türkiye about 10 days before the attack and moved in with his mother.
Gendarmerie officers, members of Türkiye's law enforcement force responsible primarily for rural areas and smaller settlements, took Yaprak into custody after the incident.
After procedures at the Bozova District Gendarmerie Command, he was referred to court and formally arrested, and sent to prison.
Footage recorded on a mobile phone also captured the assault.
The video reportedly shows Yaprak repeatedly hitting his mother with a stick as the elderly woman becomes increasingly exhausted from the blows.
An investigation into the incident remains underway.
