Türkiye's National Security Council convened for its first meeting since the PKK terror organization announced its dissolution, with officials emphasizing continued commitment to eliminating terrorism from the country's agenda.
The council, chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the Presidential Complex, met for approximately 2.5 hours to assess recent developments and the ongoing process toward a "terror-free Türkiye."
Council reaffirms commitment to liquidation process
Following the meeting, officials released a statement highlighting the government's determination to pursue the liquidation process. The council emphasized "following each stage of the liquidation process with sensitivity, permanently removing terrorism from our country's agenda, and strengthening our nation's unity and solidarity to achieve a stronger and more prosperous Türkiye."
The council addressed operations against multiple terror organizations, including PKK/KCK-PYD/YPG, FETO, and Daesh, both domestically and internationally. Officials were briefed on recent international developments and ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.
The meeting addressed the broader implications for regional stability, noting that clearing the shared geography of all terror organizations would usher in a peaceful period for neighboring countries, particularly Iraq, Syria, and Iran. Officials emphasized that enhanced security cooperation would contribute significantly to building the region's shared future.
Syria stability receives continued support
Council members discussed developments in Syria, reaffirming Türkiye's continued strong support for the Syrian administration's efforts to establish stability throughout the country. The statement expressed satisfaction with the trend toward lifting international sanctions that have affected the Syrian people.
Officials warned against initiatives that could harm Syria's sovereignty, territorial integrity, unitary structure, and political unity, calling for principled action against activities aimed at destabilizing Syria.
Regional conflicts demand international accountability
The council addressed Israel's actions in Gaza, describing them as genocide and occupation. Officials stated that Israel's systematic attacks on Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen, along with its expansionist ambitions, have disrupted peace efforts in the Middle East. The statement called on responsible international actors to fulfill their obligations in eliminating risks and threats stemming from Israeli government policies.
Türkiye maintains active mediation role
Regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the council noted that a sensitive period has begun for ending the war. Türkiye reiterated its commitment to contributing to global peace and stability through peace diplomacy and mediation activities to achieve lasting and just peace.
The meeting also addressed the peace agreement draft between Azerbaijan and Armenia, expressing satisfaction with their consensus and reaffirming expectations for establishing conditions necessary for final peace that will benefit all regional actors.
Additionally, the council discussed developments in North and East Africa, stating that Türkiye will continue and increase its support for African nations' efforts to establish security and stability.
