An old village submerged by the Karakurt Dam reservoir in eastern Türkiye has begun to emerge again after water levels dropped, revealing a mosque, a church and the remains of former homes.

The structures belong to the old Karakurt village in the Sarikamis district of Kars province. As the reservoir waters pulled back, parts of the settlement that had remained underwater became visible again.

Mosque, church and homes emerge from receding waters

The exposed area includes the village mosque, the remains of numerous houses and a church, bringing back into view traces of the community that once lived in the settlement.

Many of the structures have been reduced to ruins, with foundations and sections of walls appearing across the former village as the water level continues to recede.

Drone footage recorded from above showed the mosque, church and residential remains across the newly exposed landscape, alongside the retreating reservoir waters.

The aerial images also brought together several parts of the former settlement in the same frame, showing religious buildings and the remains of homes that had previously been hidden beneath the reservoir.

The receding waters have once again brought out physical traces of the old Karakurt village and the area where its residents once lived.
