Polish President Karol Nawrocki presented Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan with a sword during their meeting in New York, months after Erdogan gave him and other leaders custom-engraved revolvers at the NATO summit in Ankara.
The exchange took place as Erdogan and Nawrocki met Tuesday at the Turkish House, or Turkevi Center, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the U.N. General Assembly.
Erdogan had presented leaders attending the NATO summit in Ankara in July with Turkish-made revolvers engraved with their names as gifts. Nawrocki was among the leaders who received one.
During their closed-door meeting, Erdogan and Nawrocki discussed relations between Türkiye and Poland as well as regional and global developments, according to Türkiye’s Communications Directorate.
Erdogan said taking steps to increase trade between Türkiye and Poland would be beneficial and said efforts were underway to advance cooperation in several areas, particularly the defense industry.
He told Nawrocki that Türkiye is working to help end the Russia-Ukraine war and is making efforts to ensure navigational safety in the Black Sea.
On Gaza, Erdogan stressed the importance of continued international support for a two-state solution to ensure peace and stability.
Erdogan also invited Nawrocki to the COP31 Leaders’ Summit, which will be held in Antalya, Türkiye, in November.
Türkiye supported Poland’s accession to NATO in 1999, while Poland has backed Türkiye’s EU accession process.
Bilateral ties were elevated to a strategic partnership under the Declaration on Turkish-Polish Strategic Partnership in 2009.
The two countries are working toward a $15 billion bilateral trade target after trade reached $12.51 billion in 2025.
Polish exports to Türkiye totaled $6.03 billion last year, while Turkish exports to Poland stood at $6.48 billion, resulting in a $450 million trade surplus in Türkiye’s favor.
Overall bilateral trade has increased by more than 50% compared with five years ago.
