President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday renewed his call to increase Türkiye’s population, warning of a future demographic crisis as fertility rates continue to decline.

Speaking with artists and young people at an event in Istanbul, Erdogan said society should contribute to reversing population decline.

Describing himself as a grandfather of nine, he said having at least three children is essential to building strong families.

“I always tell couples to have at least three children, and this is a must to build a strong family,” Erdogan said, according to the remarks.

Fertility rate described as ‘disaster’

Türkiye has declared 2025 the “Year of the Family,” reflecting growing concern over demographic trends.

Erdogan cited data from Turkish Statistical Institute, which showed the country’s fertility rate fell to 1.48 in 2024, calling the situation a “disaster.”

“We have to multiply. This is not solely our desire,” Erdogan said, adding that increasing the population aligns with religious teachings.

He also expressed concern that even people close to him oppose population growth.

Expanded family support policies

The government has placed family policy at the center of its domestic agenda in 2025 as declining birth rates, delayed marriages and population aging pose long-term challenges.

Family support mechanisms have been expanded nationwide.

As part of these measures, an interest-free marriage loan of ₺150,000 ($3,492) has been extended beyond earthquake-affected regions, offering newly married couples a two-year grace period and a four-year repayment plan.

Birth assistance programs were also revised, introducing monthly child support alongside increased one-time payments.

Under the current system, mothers receive ₺5,000 ($115) for a first child, ₺1,500 per month for a second child, and ₺5,000 per month for third and subsequent children until the age of 5.
