An armed attack at Ayser Calik Secondary School in Türkiye’s southern province of Kahramanmaras on Wednesday left nine people dead and 13 others injured, six of them seriously, Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci said.

Speaking at an evening press briefing, Ciftci said schools across the province would remain closed for two days following the attack.

Suspect was eighth-grade student, governor says

Earlier, Kahramanmaras Governor Mukerrem Unluer said the dead included three students and the suspected shooter, though he noted it remains unclear whether the suspect died by suicide or was fatally injured during the chaos.

Unluer said the attacker was an eighth-grade student who entered two classrooms during the assault.

The governor said that the weapons may have belonged to the suspect’s father, a former police officer.

The student reportedly arrived at the school with five firearms and seven magazines.

Investigation launched with 4 prosecutors assigned

Justice Minister Akin Gurlek said the Kahramanmaras Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office had launched an immediate investigation.

“Regarding the armed attack that occurred at a school in Kahramanmaras, the Kahramanmaras Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has immediately launched an investigation, assigning three deputy chief public prosecutors and four public prosecutors to the case,” Gurlek said.

Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci traveled to Kahramanmaras following the attack.

Ciftci said four chief civil inspectors and four chief police inspectors had been assigned to investigate the shooting.

Emergency medical teams and ambulances were dispatched to the scene shortly after the attack.

Security forces secured the area as the investigation continued.

This comes just one day after an incident in which a shooter wounded 16 people and then killed himself in Sanliurfa's Siverek district.
