The official aircraft carrying Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez was forced to make an unplanned landing in the Turkish capital late Saturday after a technical fault was detected mid-flight, according to Spain's Secretariat of State for Communication.
Sanchez was traveling to Yerevan to attend the 8th summit of the European Political Community, a major gathering of nearly 50 heads of state and government convened Monday in the Armenian capital, when the incident occurred. The Secretariat described the malfunction as an "unforeseeable technical event," adding that safety protocols required the crew to divert the Airbus A310 to the nearest secure location, Ankara's Esenboga Airport.
Officials confirmed the landing was completed without incident and that no one aboard was harmed. Technical teams launched an inspection of the aircraft following touchdown.
