Turkish naval special forces safely detonated an object believed to be debris from a crashed kamikaze drone after it washed ashore on the Karaburun coast in Istanbul's Arnavutkoy district with explosive material attached.
Residents spotted the fragmented, suspicious object along the coastline between Arnavutkoy's Karaburun beach and Catalca's Ormanli beach and reported it to authorities.
Teams dispatched to the scene from the Coast Guard's Marmara and Straits Regional Command and the Underwater Defense Group Command conducted an initial assessment, determining the object could be debris from a crashed kamikaze drone.
Underwater Defense (SAS) commandos then conducted a technical examination and found explosive material on the object.
Following security measures, SAS teams carried out a controlled detonation of the device.
Dozens of drones that have missed their targets or malfunctioned during the Russia-Ukraine war have previously washed up on Turkish coasts along the Black Sea, raising concerns about the security implications of the conflict for neighboring countries.
The discovery comes after Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan reiterated at a joint news conference with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha in Kyiv that the risk of the war spreading, a concern Türkiye has raised since the conflict began, remains serious, citing recent developments threatening Black Sea security.
"We do not want the war to be carried into the Black Sea," Fidan said, adding, "The targeting of ports, tankers, and fishing boats in the Black Sea and putting civilians' lives at risk cannot be justified."
