Transition period for old driver’s licenses ends; 1.8M yet to renew

The transition period for renewing old-style driver’s licenses in Türkiye officially ends on Friday, with approximately 1.81 million license holders yet to complete the process, according to information obtained by Anadolu Agency from the Directorate General of Population and Citizenship Affairs.

New type driver’s licenses have been issued since Jan. 1, 2016, and the transition period has previously been extended four times. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that no further extensions will be granted.

Surge in final day applications

According to the Directorate General of Population and Citizenship Affairs, 96,134 applications were submitted in August and 64,874 in September. On the final day, 15,084 people had already applied by lunchtime. In the last 11 days alone, 152,944 licenses were renewed, reflecting the rush as the deadline approaches.

Renewal fees set to increase

Until the end of Saturday, the renewal fee is ₺15 ($0.36). Starting from November, fees will rise significantly:

  • B-class licenses: ₺7,438.6 ($176.86)
  • A, A1, A2, F classes: ₺3,643.1 ($86.62)
  • Other classes (B1, BE, C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D, DE, G, M): ₺11,235.6 ($267.13)
