Turkish domestic tourists spent 76.4 billion ($1.89B) on travel within the country during the first three months of 2025, marking a 68.9% increase compared to the same period last year, according to official statistics released Tuesday.

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) reported that 10.75 million residents took domestic trips during the first quarter, making a total of 12.65 million journeys with at least one overnight stay. This represents a 28.4% increase in total trips compared to the first quarter of 2024.

Travel volume and duration show strong growth

Travelers recorded 85.3 million overnight stays during the period, with an average trip duration of 6.7 nights. The average spending per trip reached 6,040 Turkish lira.

Personal expenses accounted for 93.5% of total travel spending at 71.5 billion lira, while package tour expenses made up the remaining 6.5% at nearly 5 billion lira.

Food and transportation drive spending increases

Food and beverage expenses dominated travel spending, accounting for 32% of the total, followed by transportation at 28.4% and accommodation at 10.8%.

All three categories showed significant year-over-year growth, with food and beverage spending up 62.5%, transportation costs rising 66.3%, and accommodation expenses increasing 66.7%.

Visiting relatives and friends remained the primary reason for domestic travel, representing 71.3% of all trips. Leisure, entertainment and vacation travel accounted for 19.6% of journeys, while health-related travel made up 5%.

Friends and family homes preferred over hotels

The most popular accommodation choice was staying with friends or relatives, accounting for 67.7 million overnight stays. Travelers' own homes ranked second with 8.8 million overnight stays, while hotels captured third place with nearly 5 million overnight stays.

The robust growth in domestic tourism spending reflects increased travel activity among Turkish residents, with both the number of trips and per-trip expenditures rising substantially from 2024 levels.
