Turkish diplomatic sources have flatly rejected claims circulating in Greek Cypriot and Russian media alleging that Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan canceled a planned visit to Kazakhstan over a diplomatic row involving Greek Cyprus.
Officials familiar with the matter stated that the rumors are entirely baseless, clarifying that the Foreign Minister's current diplomatic tour was strictly designed for East and Southeast Asian countries.
The controversy erupted following a report by Marios Adamou, a correspondent for the Greek Cypriot broadcaster Ant1.
During a prime-time news broadcast, Adamou claimed that Türkiye’s top diplomat had abruptly called off a scheduled trip to the Kazakh capital, Astana.
According to the broadcaster, the alleged cancellation was an expression of Ankara's "dissatisfaction" with recent high-level diplomatic engagements by a Greek Cypriot delegation led by Nikos Christodoulides in Kazakhstan.
The Greek Cypriot claims were subsequently picked up and amplified by various Russian media outlets, presenting the narrative as a sudden diplomatic rift between Ankara and Astana.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, Turkish Foreign Ministry sources strongly dismissed the report, explaining that no such cancellation took place because no such visit was on the immediate agenda.
Sources noted that the false information was being circulated by actors looking to manufacture a diplomatic crisis between Türkiye and its close partners.
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan's current regional tour was planned with a focus on East and Southeast Asia.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan visited Singapore, Indonesia, and South Korea over the last few days as part of an official East and Southeast Asia tour focused on boosting trade, defense cooperation, and regional diplomatic ties.
Fidan and Turkish diplomatic delegations have maintained highly active channels with their Kazakh counterparts quite recently, according to the sources.
Only two weeks ago, a Turkish diplomatic delegation was on the ground in Kazakhstan for an official bilateral visit to Astana, which was immediately followed by high-level talks at the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) Summit in Turkistan, a source added.
