Turkish journalist Alican Uludag arrested

Journalist Alican Uludag was arrested Friday on charges of "publicly insulting the president" and "publicly spreading misleading information," following a suo motu investigation launched by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.

Uludag was detained in Ankara on Thursday evening as part of the investigation. After completing police processing, he was brought to the Istanbul Courthouse in Caglayan following a health check.

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office stated that the investigation was launched suo motu in connection with posts Uludag made on his account on the U.S.-based social media platform X, on charges of "publicly insulting the president" and "publicly spreading misleading information."

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office's full written announcement follows as: "A suo motu investigation has been launched by our Chief Public Prosecutor's Office into certain posts made by a person named Alican Uludag through his X social media account with the username '@alicanuludag,' on charges of 'Publicly Insulting the President' and 'Publicly Spreading Misleading Information,' and the suspect has been apprehended and taken into custody in the province of Ankara. Instructions have been given for the person to be brought before our Chief Public Prosecutor's Office under custody on 20.02.2026. The investigation is being conducted meticulously."

After giving his statement at the prosecutor's office, Uludag was referred to the criminal court of peace with a request for his arrest on the charge of "insulting the president."

The court ruled that Uludag be arrested on the charge brought against him.
