Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will host Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar in Türkiye on Monday to discuss bilateral relations, trade, and security cooperation, Turkish diplomatic sources said.
The visit will be Tuggar’s first official trip to Türkiye. During the meetings, Fidan is expected to underline Nigeria’s constructive role in promoting stability, prosperity, and peace in West Africa.
Fidan will also address steps to boost bilateral trade and mutual investment, including opportunities for Turkish companies operating in Nigeria.
He is expected to emphasize the strong potential for expanding cooperation in military affairs and the defense industry, as well as the importance of solidarity in combating terrorist organizations.
The Turkish foreign minister will highlight the need to enhance coordination between Ankara and Abuja within international organizations such as the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the Developing Eight (D-8).
Fidan is also expected to stress the importance of continued contact between Türkiye and Nigeria, both members of the OIC-Arab League Gaza Contact Group, on preserving the ceasefire in Gaza, improving humanitarian conditions, and supporting a two-state solution.
In addition, he will underline the shared position of Türkiye and Nigeria on respecting Somalia’s sovereignty, national unity, and territorial integrity in line with international law.
Diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Nigeria were established on Nov. 9, 1960.
Bilateral trade volume reached $688.4 million in the first 11 months of 2025. Including energy trade, Nigeria became Türkiye’s largest trading partner in Sub-Saharan Africa in 2025.
Over 50 Turkish-owned companies operate in Nigeria, with investments totaling around $400 million. The value of projects carried out by Turkish contractors in Nigeria has approached $3 billion in recent years.
Cooperation in the military, security, and defense industries continues to grow, in line with Türkiye’s support for Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts.
Between 1992 and 2023, a total of 199 Nigerian students graduated through Türkiye Scholarships, while 149 Nigerian students are currently studying in Türkiye under the program.
