Türkiye's communications chief condemned an attack on the Turkish flag along the Syrian border as a direct provocation against the nation, vowing that perpetrators would face the "most resolute response" following the incident near the Nusaybin-Qamishli border crossing.

Burhanettin Duran said Tuesday that YPG-linked supporters on the Syrian side of the border carried out what he called a "treacherous attack" on the flag, describing it as targeting "our nation's peace and developments as part of the fight against terrorism."

The YPG is a group that forms the backbone of the SDF which controls significant territory in northeastern Syria. Türkiye considers the YPG a terrorist organization linked to the PKK, which has waged an insurgency inside Türkiye and in the broader region for decades.

Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc condemned the incident and announced that the Mardin Chief Public Prosecutor's Office had opened a judicial investigation into the attack. "I condemn the despicable attempt against our flag on the Nusaybin-Qamishli border line," Tunc said, describing the incident as heinous.

The announcement confirmed that formal legal proceedings had begun at the prosecutorial level in Mardin, the province that includes Nusaybin along Türkiye's southeastern border with Syria.

Investigation underway as officials promise accountability

Duran announced that Türkiye launched an immediate investigation into the incident through relevant institutions. "The perpetrators of this treacherous attempt and the structures behind them will be identified within the framework of the principles of the rule of law, and all necessary judicial and administrative proceedings will be carried out without delay," he said in a statement on NSosyal, a Turkish social media platform.

The communications chief emphasized that "no attack or provocation will go unpunished."

Officials characterize incident as sabotage attempt

In his statement, Duran characterized the attack as evidence of "dark forces aiming to sabotage the goal of a terrorism-free Türkiye." He insisted the incident would not undermine government resolve or national unity.

"These attempts will neither weaken the determination of our state nor harm the unity and solidarity of our nation," Duran said.

The ruling AK Party spokesperson separately condemned what was described as a "despicable attack" on the flag, stating that those who attack Turkish values "will definitely pay the price." The spokesperson said Türkiye would deliver "the clearest and strongest response" to SDF supporters responsible for the border incident.
