Turkish social media influencer and YouTuber Enes Batur Sungurtekin was taken into custody at an airport after a detention warrant was issued while he was abroad as part of a drug investigation in Istanbul, authorities said Thursday.
The investigation is being conducted by the Istanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office.
It is ongoing on charges of “manufacture and trafficking of narcotic or stimulant substances,” “facilitating the use of narcotic or stimulant substances,” and “purchasing, accepting, or possessing narcotic or stimulant substances for use, or using narcotic or stimulant substances.”
Within the scope of the probe, Sungurtekin, for whom a detention warrant had been issued because he was abroad, was detained at the airport upon his return, officials said.
As part of the same investigation, Hasan Can Kaya, Yusuf Aktas (known as Reynmen), Emirhan Cakal, Mazlum Akturk, Mert Eren Bulbul, Sila Dundar, Dondu Sahin, Burak Gungor, Ahmet Can Dundar, Berkcan Guven and Firat Yayla were previously taken into custody.
After undergoing health checks, the suspects were transferred to the Forensic Medicine Institute, where blood and hair samples were collected.
They were then taken to the Istanbul Provincial Gendarmerie Command and later released.
By court decision, a judicial control measure in the form of a ban on leaving the country was imposed on those suspects.
Detention warrants were also issued for Enes Batur Sungurtekin, Baris Murat Yagci, Ecenaz Ucer, Kemal Can Parlak, Cagri Taner, Turgut Ekim, Barbaros Dikmen, Yaren Alaca and Nisa Bolukbasi due to their being abroad at the time.
Authorities said another suspect, Ibrahim Tilaver, would be taken into custody after completing hospital treatment, while Eray Durmus was still being sought.
Baris Murat Yagci was detained at the airport on Feb. 2 and referred to the Forensic Medicine Institute to provide samples.
He was later released after giving a statement at the Provincial Gendarmerie Command.
