Türkiye welcomed the formation of Iraq's new government on Thursday, congratulating Prime Minister Ali Zaidi after his cabinet won a confidence vote in the Iraqi Council of Representatives, as regional powers moved swiftly to signal their support for Baghdad's incoming administration.
In an official statement, Ankara expressed hope that the new government would take "strong steps" toward Iraq's stability, prosperity, and regional integration during what it described as a sensitive period for the broader region.
Türkiye affirmed its commitment to supporting Iraq's efforts in that direction and pledged to advance cooperation with its neighbor "in every field" in the period ahead.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also offered congratulations via social media, welcoming the cabinet's approval and specifically noting that Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein would remain in his post. Araghchi said expanding "friendly and brotherly relations" between Tehran and Baghdad would remain a top priority of Iranian foreign policy.
Iraq's parliament approved the government program along with 14 cabinet members by an absolute majority. Among those confirmed were ministers for oil, industry, electricity, health, environment, agriculture, water resources, trade, justice, education, transport, foreign affairs, finance, and communications.
The 23-member cabinet was not fully seated in Thursday's session. Nominees for the interior, planning, construction and housing, culture and tourism, and higher education portfolios failed to win confidence votes, while candidates for the labor, sports and youth, migration and displacement, and defense ministries were not submitted to parliament at all.
A further session is expected to be scheduled to complete the cabinet.
