Türkiye’s media watchdog has imposed maximum fines and ordered the removal of several productions from five digital platforms, citing violations of “national and moral values” under the government’s 2025 Family Year initiative.
The Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTUK) said in a statement that the penalties were aimed at protecting children from harmful material and safeguarding the Turkish family structure.
At its latest council meeting, RTUK issued 3% administrative fines to Disney+, Prime Video, Netflix, HBO Max and MUBI, alongside catalog removals of specific films and series.
Disney+ was sanctioned over the film "All of Us Strangers," which the council said portrayed homosexuality “positively with long scenes” and included content “disregarding family values.”
Prime Video’s series Those About To Die was fined for “bloody executions, violence and homosexual relations presented with sexual scenes.”
Netflix’s "Cobalt Blue" and HBO Max’s "Looking: The Movie" were penalized for “promoting homosexuality” and “intensive use of homosexual relations and nudity,” both deemed violations of morality and family protection principles.
MUBI’s "Benedetta" was sanctioned for “obscene content reaching the level of pornography” and “violating public morality.”
Each platform received the maximum penalty of a 3% administrative fine and the ordered removal of the listed productions from their Turkish catalogs.
