Türkiye will take part in the International Nuclear Science Olympiad (INSO-2026) as a competitor for the first time, with the event scheduled for August 2-9 in Jeddah, a city on Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast.
According to Türkiye's Energy and Natural Resources Ministry, the high school students representing the country completed their final preparations in Ankara.
Students from Istanbul Ozel Bahcesehir Science and Technology High School earned the right to represent Türkiye following a nationwide selection process that drew applications from 30 schools.
The students trained on a curriculum covering atomic structure, the nucleus, radiation, fission, fusion, environmental radioactivity, radiation risks and safety, and applications of nuclear and radiation technologies.
Türkiye took part as an observer in the olympiad last year. This year's edition marks the event's third staging and Türkiye's first appearance as a competing nation, held to strengthen international cooperation in nuclear science and technology education.
The team completed two days of hands-on training at the Nuclear Energy Research Institute (NUKEN), part of the Türkiye Energy, Nuclear and Mining Research Agency (TENMAK), which operates under the Energy and Natural Resources Ministry. The students will compete for medals.
Student Omer Akan said, 'We prepared very well for this process, and we hope to achieve great success in these competitions.'
Fellow student Mert Andac Kara said the team is excited to bring home medals in the country's first appearance at the Olympiad.
