Türkiye’s northwestern province of Bolu Mayor Tanju Ozcan and 12 other individuals linked to the municipality were taken into custody early Saturday morning as part of an investigation into alleged extortion, local media reported.
The detentions were carried out simultaneously under instructions from the prosecutor’s office. Law enforcement units conducted the operation at multiple locations.
Ozcan confirmed his detention in a post on his X account, suggesting that the investigation centers on scholarships granted by the municipality.
"I was taken into custody because thousands of students in my hometown were given scholarships. This is an honor for me," Ozcan said.
Authorities have not yet released further details about the scope of the allegations.
Ozcan, who serves as mayor of Bolu in northwestern Türkiye, represents the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP).
He was first elected mayor in 2019 after serving several terms as a member of parliament.
