An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), assessed to possibly be loaded with ammunition, was found Friday on the Black Sea coast at Karaburun beach in Istanbul’s Arnavutkoy district.
Citizens on the shore first noticed the UAV in the morning and notified Coast Guard teams. Navy Underwater Defense (SAS) commandos were also dispatched to the area. Following an initial examination by the teams, the UAV was expected to be destroyed at the site where it was found as a safety and security measure.
According to an initial photo examination by Türkiye Today staff, the weaponized UAV appears to resemble a Ukrainian FP-1 deep-strike drone. An official technical examination is currently ongoing to confirm its exact origin. Following the initial discovery, the UAV found on the beach was also filmed from the air with a drone camera.
The incident occurred in the morning at Karaburun beach.
Local fishermen on the shore first noticed an unfamiliar object and immediately alerted nearby lifeguards.
The lifeguard teams arrived at the scene and recognized the object as a UAV. They quickly notified the Coast Guard, and responding teams began an initial inspection of the craft.
Because early assessments indicated the drone might be carrying explosives, SAS commandos were dispatched to the scene and began working on the UAV to neutralize any potential threat. Following their examinations, authorities decided the UAV would be destroyed on-site as a strict security measure.
Drone footage captured from the area clearly showed the UAV's large body and wide wing structure.
Muhammet Can Coban, the lifeguard chief who went to the area after the UAV was found, said they encountered an unusual sight after receiving a report from citizens.
“When we came to the scene in the morning after receiving a report from citizens, we encountered an unusual sight,” Coban said. “We used to see such things on television all the time. When we saw it here, we were also surprised.”
“After we determined where it was, we informed the Coast Guard teams. They are currently carrying out their examinations at the scene,” he said.
Coban said the object was different from others previously found in the area.
“This is very different from the one found in recent days, and its wingspan is very large,” he said. “I have seen something like this for the first time.”
“We have friends engaged in fishing, and citizens walking by the sea and on the shore. Encountering such things saddens and frightens us,” he added.
“There was something like a stove pipe in front of it, but we do not know whether there is a bomb inside or not,” Coban said.
Various objects assessed to be ammunition or remnants of war have been seen in recent days on the Black Sea shores in and around Karaburun.
The origin of the UAV that reached the beach, how it arrived in the area, and what systems it carried are expected to become clear after technical examinations.
