Vessel traffic in Türkiye's Dardanelles Strait was temporarily suspended in both directions Wednesday after a bulk carrier ran aground, the Transport and Infrastructure Ministry said.
The ministry said the 190-meter-long San Marino-flagged bulk carrier Pilatus Marine, which was sailing from Syria to Russia, ran aground because of an engine failure at the Nara turn in the Canakkale Strait.
"Following the incident, the Kurtarma-19 and Kurtarma-16 tugboats affiliated with our Directorate General of Coastal Safety quickly reached the vessel," the ministry said.
"Our divers have taken action by diving to determine the condition of the vessel, after which damage assessment and a rescue operation will be carried out," it added.
"Due to this incident, vessel traffic in the Dardanelles Strait has been temporarily suspended in both directions."
The Dardanelles connects the Marmara and Aegean seas and is a key export route from the Black Sea to world markets.
