Watermelon and tomatoes were the most consumed fruit and vegetable in Istanbul, Türkiye's largest city, in August, according to sales data from the city's two wholesale produce markets.
The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's Market Directorate released figures for produce sold at the Bayrampasa Fruit and Vegetable Market, on the European side of the city, and the Atasehir Fruit and Vegetable Market, on the Asian side, for August.
The two markets sold a combined 274,157 tons of produce in August, consisting of 105,573 tons of fruit and 168,584 tons of vegetables.
The Bayrampasa market sold 76 types of produce, including 30 fruit and 46 vegetable varieties, while the Atasehir market sold 72 types, including 29 fruit and 43 vegetable varieties.
Of the produce brought to Bayrampasa for sale in August, 80,155 tons were fruit and 129,675 tons were vegetables, out of 209,830 tons total. At Atasehir, 25,418 tons of fruit and 38,909 tons of vegetables were brought in, out of 64,327 tons total.
Watermelon was the top-selling fruit across both markets, with 16,672 tons sold at an average price of ₺14.63 ($0.30) per kilogram. Melon followed with 14,608 tons, then grapes with 14,550 tons, peaches with 10,113 tons and nectarines with 8,491 tons. Bananas, lemons, plums, figs and pears rounded out the top 10 fruits by volume.
Tomatoes led vegetable sales, with 56,417 tons sold at an average price of ₺49.63 per kilogram. Peppers followed with 18,614 tons, then cucumbers with 17,940 tons, potatoes with 14,503 tons and eggplants with 8,841 tons. Dry onions, beans, corn, squash and carrots completed the top 10 vegetables by volume.
Average prices per kilogram also varied by product. Melon sold for ₺19.38, grapes for ₺45.65, peaches for ₺37.25, nectarines for ₺48.44, and bananas for ₺67.91. Lemons sold for ₺58, plums for ₺66.63, figs for ₺108.28, and pears for ₺65.03.
Among vegetables, peppers sold for ₺50.02 per kilogram, cucumbers for ₺24.25, potatoes for ₺36.19, eggplants for ₺32.16, and dry onions for ₺46.75. Beans sold for ₺81.57, corn for ₺22.75, squash for ₺26.56 and carrots for ₺17.91.
Pomegranate was the most expensive product sold at the markets in August, at an average of ₺184.13 per kilogram. Grape leaves followed at ₺176.92, then kiwi at ₺151.88, mushrooms at ₺147.44, and okra at ₺138.75. Dry garlic, cherries, figs, pineapple and strawberries also completed the 10 most expensive products.
