Eighteen U.S. service members have been seriously wounded during military operations against Iran, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said Monday.
Spokesperson Capt. Tim Hawkins confirmed the updated casualty figures as the joint U.S.-Israeli military campaign entered its third day.
Earlier, CENTCOM had announced that three U.S. service members were killed in action and five were seriously wounded. The death toll was later updated to four service members.
Sources told CNN that all four died from the same attack in Kuwait. One of the service members succumbed to wounds sustained during Iran’s initial wave of counterattacks.
Overall, 18 personnel are now considered seriously wounded amid the operations.
The strikes, launched Saturday as part of a joint U.S.-Israeli offensive, killed several senior Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
In response, Tehran carried out drone and missile strikes targeting several Gulf countries, mainly U.S. military bases in the region.
CENTCOM also said earlier that three U.S. F-15E Strike Eagles flying in support of the operation went down over Kuwait due to an “apparent friendly fire incident.” All six crew members ejected safely and were recovered in stable condition.
