Two people died and 11 crew members were rescued after a ship caught fire and sank in the Black Sea outside Romania’s territorial waters, Romanian authorities said Monday.
Romania’s Interior Ministry said rescue operations were launched after a serious maritime incident involving a fire on a vessel outside the country’s territorial waters.
The ministry said 11 crew members have been rescued.
Romania’s Naval Authority identified the ship as the Royad Mammadov and said the incident involved a fire on board.
According to initial reports, the vessel is Turkish-owned Royad Mammadov, IMO 9356969, a general cargo ship built in 2006 and sailing under the flag of St. Kitts and Nevis.
Further details about the cause of the fire, the ship’s route and the nationalities of the crew were not immediately available.
