The “Popular Forces,” an armed group led by Abu Shabab, said Tuesday in a video message that it welcomes the U.N. Security Council’s decision to establish a Peace Council and deploy security forces to disarm Gaza, declaring its full readiness to cooperate with the incoming mission.
In the recorded statement, the militia expressed its support for measures aimed at strengthening security and stability in the Gaza Strip, noting that it would engage positively with any efforts designed to protect civilians and create a more stable environment.
Deputy Commander of the Popular Forces Ghassan al-Dahini delivered a briefing to unit members as part of the direct coordination with the Peace Council and in line with the directives of Commander Abu Shabab, stressing the need for rapid action and timely execution of tasks to ensure the safety of civilians in Rafah and provide an environment free of extremist threats.
Dahini noted that the presence of unlawful armed elements in parts of Rafah requires firm and disciplined measures consistent with international standards for civilian protection.
He emphasized that the objective is to secure the area and prepare it to receive families as quickly as possible, particularly given the difficult weather conditions.
Participating soldiers expressed their readiness and full commitment to carrying out the mission with high efficiency, in support of ongoing coordination with the Peace Council and in service of the safety and security of the population.
The armed group faces allegations that Israel backed its campaign in an attempt to portray it as a “legitimate” alternative to Hamas. The group denies any ties to Israeli forces, describing itself as a nationalist movement aimed at serving people opposed to Hamas rule.
Yasser Abu Shabab, a controversial figure, and his armed group are also accused of seizing aid shipments entering through the Kerem Abu Salem crossing.
According to U.N. and diplomatic sources, his gang has looted aid shipments, sold goods on the black market, carried out reconnaissance for Israeli authorities, and acted as a proxy militia in depopulated areas.
