Airports across Greece halted arrivals and departures on Sunday after issues affecting radio frequencies disrupted aviation operations, according to Greek state television and the country’s civil aviation authority.
Authorities said they were investigating the cause of the disruption.
Greece’s civil aviation authority said that while some overflights using the Athens Flight Information Region (FIR) continued to be serviced, restrictions were imposed on airport operations nationwide for safety reasons.
Flight tracking data showed Greek airspace was largely empty as the disruptions unfolded.
State broadcaster ERT reported that airport arrivals and departures were suspended at 9:00 a.m. local time (0700 GMT).
Reporting from Athens’ Eleftherios Venizelos Airport, the broadcaster showed crowded departure terminals filled with stranded travelers.
ERT said flights were being diverted to neighboring countries as a result of the suspension.
In Israel, an Airport Authority spokesperson said Greek airspace was closed until 4:00 p.m. local time, advising passengers to expect delays to arrivals and departures due to the disruption.
