Airstrikes targeted Houthi positions across several Yemeni provinces Thursday as intense clashes between government forces and the Iran-backed rebels continued, with casualties reported among fighters and civilians, according to local media.

Al-Jumhuriya TV reported that an airstrike destroyed a Houthi missile launcher on Mount Ba'dan in Ibb province, marking the second such strike in the area in less than 24 hours.

Additional airstrikes targeted Houthi positions near the villages of al-Sarari and Dhi al-Barah, southeast of Mount Saber in Taiz province, the broadcaster reported.

Meanwhile, Aden TV reported intense fighting between government troops and Houthi forces in the Maqaterah, al-Sawalah and al-Zariq areas along the Lahj front.

Airstrikes also hit Houthi reinforcements in Naqil al-Saha in Maqaterah, according to the channel.

Forces from Yemen's Fourth Military Region destroyed a Houthi vehicle carrying a 23 mm anti-aircraft gun on the Maqaterah front, Aden TV reported.

The broadcaster said dozens of Houthi fighters killed or wounded in clashes along the Maqaterah front had been brought to Khalifa Hospital in the city of Turbah.

The casualty figures could not be independently verified.

Eight civilians killed or wounded in Taiz missile strike

Separately, Aden TV reported that eight civilians, including children, were killed or injured in a Houthi missile attack on the al-Athawir area of Hayfan district in Taiz province.

The channel also reported that Yemeni government forces had carried out 322 military operations, killing 64 Houthi fighters and destroying or disabling 16 military vehicles.

It did not specify the period covered by those operations.

The latest fighting comes amid a government offensive launched Oct. 5 under the name "Dawn of Yemen," aimed at restoring control over state institutions and retaking the capital, Sanaa, from the Houthis.

Houthis claim ballistic missile attack on Riyadh airport

The escalation followed a Houthi announcement Wednesday that the group had targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, the Saudi capital, with a ballistic missile.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree claimed responsibility for the operation, which came after earlier attacks forced the airport to close for two weeks before partially reopening in late October.

In the early hours of Wednesday, Saudi Arabia's civil defense authorities issued a brief warning about a potential threat in the Riyadh area.

A statement said a "warning has been issued by the National Early Warning Platform in Riyadh Province to alert of a potential danger."

The warning was lifted shortly afterward.

Saudi authorities' warning did not independently confirm that the airport had been struck.

Renewed fighting deepens Yemen's humanitarian crisis

The latest attacks come amid a renewed phase of Yemen's civil war, with fighting between government forces and the Houthis having resumed in July after more than three years of relative calm.

The renewed hostilities have killed or wounded thousands of people and displaced more than 250,000, according to United Nations reports.

The escalation ended a period of relative calm that had largely prevailed since April 2022, placing additional pressure on Yemen's already difficult humanitarian situation.

Yemen has been engulfed in civil war since the Houthis seized Sanaa and several other provinces in September 2014.

A Saudi-led coalition intervened in March 2015 in support of the internationally recognized Yemeni government.
