Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev expressed support Thursday for the establishment of an "independent and sovereign" Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

A statement by the Azerbaijani presidency said Aliyev made the remarks during a meeting with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa.

Palestinian premier thanks Azerbaijan for support

Mustafa conveyed the greetings of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to Aliyev, the statement said.

Aliyev asked Mustafa to convey his own greetings to Abbas.

Mustafa said Palestine was currently in a "difficult situation" and expressed hope that Palestinians would be able to overcome it "with the help of friends," according to the statement.

He thanked Aliyev for Azerbaijan's support for Palestine, including Baku's intention to build a secondary school in Palestine as humanitarian assistance.

Baku cites aid, diplomatic support

The statement said the opening of Azerbaijan's Representative Office in Ramallah and Baku's coverage of the expenses of the Palestinian Embassy in Azerbaijan were described during the meeting as indicators of strong bilateral relations.

The meeting also recalled that Azerbaijan provided $5 million in financial assistance to Palestine after the Conference on the Establishment of an Islamic Financial Safety Net and the Conference of Donor Countries on Financing the Sector Plan for the Development of the City of Jerusalem, hosted in Baku in 2013.

The statement said Azerbaijan also assists Palestine through the United Nations (U.N.) agency for Palestinian refugees.

The statement said 23 Palestinian students, out of a total of 37, were studying in Azerbaijan through the Heydar Aliyev International Education Grant.

Mustafa expressed gratitude to Aliyev for the support, it said.

The meeting also addressed the possible export of Palestinian agricultural products to Azerbaijan on preferential terms, among other issues.
