President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday that any Cyprus initiative disregarding the sovereign equality, inherent rights and legitimate interests of Turkish Cypriots would fail, following U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ visit to the divided island.
Speaking after a Cabinet meeting at the presidential complex, Erdogan said the Cyprus issue could not be reduced to a technical power-sharing dispute between two communities.
“Fundamentally, it concerns the recognition of the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot people,” he said.
Erdogan said formulas seeking to confine Turkish Cypriots to minority status had failed in the past and argued that calm on the island could be achieved only through a fair, lasting and sustainable settlement.
Erdogan described Guterres’ visit as significant, noting that he was the first U.N. secretary-general to travel to the island in 16 years.
He said Türkiye had consistently supported Guterres’ peace efforts and would continue close consultations with him.
Erdogan warned that approaches ignoring historical realities could not produce a viable outcome.
He said Türkiye was closely monitoring groups seeking to use regional tensions to make Cyprus part of new military structures and geopolitical calculations.
“Türkiye will never leave its Turkish Cypriot brothers and sisters alone, today or tomorrow, just as it has throughout history and 52 years ago,” Erdogan said, adding that Türkiye would not allow past suffering to be repeated.
Erdogan recalled last week’s commemoration of the 52nd anniversary of the Cyprus Peace Operation, describing July 20, 1974, as a historic turning point that secured the existence, freedom and safety of Turkish Cypriots.
He said Türkiye acted under its rights and responsibilities as a guarantor power arising from international agreements, ended the persecution faced by Turkish Cypriots and helped establish peace and stability on the island.
Erdogan commemorated those killed during the operation and wished veterans good health.
He also paid tribute to then-Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, Deputy Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan, Alparslan Turkes, Turkish Cypriot leaders, military commanders and other officials who contributed to the operation.
Erdogan said Türkiye was strengthening cooperation with the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) each year to support its development in tourism, higher education, technology and digital transformation.
He said the goal was for TRNC to become a regional leader in those sectors and a center of stability and prosperity in the eastern Mediterranean.
Erdogan said Türkiye would continue developing joint projects, including an underwater natural gas pipeline.
He also pointed to the previous water supply project that permanently addressed the Turkish Cypriot community’s water needs.
