At least 17 vessels have been attacked in and around the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman since the conflict in the Middle East began two weeks ago, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
The incidents have resulted in at least one death. UKMTO and India’s Embassy in Oman said an Indian national was killed during one of the attacks.
UKMTO said multiple incidents have occurred across key shipping routes since early March.
On March 1, two tankers were struck by projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz, while another tanker was hit while docked in Bahrain. A fourth tanker, the MKD VYOM, was struck in the Gulf of Oman, killing one person.
A fifth vessel was also attacked when a projectile detonated close to it in the Persian Gulf.
On March 3, two vessels anchored in the Gulf of Oman were struck by projectiles. UKMTO also reported a drone sighting near a bulk carrier in the area, which impacted the water nearby.
On March 4, explosions were reported on board two vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf. A projectile also detonated about one nautical mile from a third vessel drifting in the Persian Gulf.
Further attacks were reported in the following days.
On March 6, a tug vessel in the Strait of Hormuz was struck by projectiles.
On March 7, a drone struck an offshore drilling rig in the Persian Gulf, causing injuries and forcing the evacuation of personnel.
On March 10, a vessel in the Persian Gulf was hit by a projectile that caused possible structural damage.
On March 11, a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz, the Mayuree Naree, was struck by a projectile. Three other vessels in the Persian Gulf were also hit by projectiles the same day.
On March 12, a container ship in the Persian Gulf was struck by a projectile that caused a fire on board.
