A car bomb exploded near a Defense Ministry building in Damascus's Bab Sharqi district on Tuesday, killing one soldier and wounding 12 others, Syrian state news agency SANA reported.
The Syrian Defense Ministry's media and communications department told SANA that an army unit had discovered an explosive device prepared for detonation near one of the ministry's buildings in the Bab Sharqi area.
Forces moved immediately to dismantle it before a car bomb exploded in the same area, the ministry said.
Najib al-Naasan, director of ambulance and emergency services in Damascus, told Syrian state television, Alikhbariah TV, that the explosion resulted in one death and 12 injuries.
The wounded were transferred to nearby hospitals, and medical teams continued to provide treatment to them, Syria's Health Ministry said.
Alikhbariah initially reported that an explosion had occurred in the Bab Sharqi area of Damascus and that its nature was under investigation. No group claimed responsibility for the attack.
The incident came as Syria's transitional administration works to tighten security across the country following the ouster of Bashar al-Assad in late 2024 after 24 years in power.
Assad fled to Russia, marking the end of the Baath Party rule since 1963.
A transitional administration headed by President Ahmad Al-Sharaa took office in January 2025.
