The body of another person missing from the Filo Jet passenger vessel that sank off Girne on Aug. 30 has been recovered from the wreckage, raising the death toll to 15, Turkish Cyprus Prime Minister Unal Ustel said.
The discovery reduced the number of people still missing to 13, while identification procedures for the recovered body have begun.
“The number of people who lost their lives has risen to 15, and the number of missing has fallen to 13,” Ustel said in a statement.
He said authorities had mobilized all available resources since the accident and that efforts to find the remaining missing people were continuing without interruption.
The high-speed passenger vessel Filo Jet was carrying 267 passengers and crew from Girne to Tasucu in Mersin, Türkiye, when it sank on Sunday, Aug. 30.
The vessel began taking on water from its bow shortly after departing Girne Port and sank while attempting to return to the harbor.
A total of 239 people were rescued following the accident.
The wreckage of the Filo Jet was located off Girne at a depth of 554 meters.
Authorities said the latest body was recovered from inside the wreck.
Search efforts are continuing for the remaining 13 missing people.
