The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Monday strongly condemned a drone attack targeting its consulate building in northern Iraq.

In a statement, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the country’s Consulate General in Iraq's Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) region had been targeted.

The ministry described the incident as a “treacherous terrorist attack,” noting that the drone strike caused damage to the consulate building but resulted in no casualties.

The statement emphasized that targeting diplomatic missions constitutes a clear violation of international law, particularly the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which guarantees the full immunity of diplomatic premises and personnel.

It also warned that the attack represents “a dangerous escalation and a threat to regional security and stability.”

The UAE called on the Iraqi government and the KRG administration to take the necessary measures to investigate the incident, identify those responsible and hold them accountable.

The ministry stressed the importance of protecting diplomatic missions and personnel in accordance with international laws and norms, adding that the UAE firmly rejects such attacks aimed at undermining security and stability.

The development comes as regional tensions have escalated since Feb. 28, when the U.S. and Israel launched a joint attack on Iran that has killed more than 1,200 people, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and Gulf countries that are home to U.S. military assets.

Saudi Arabia also condemns attack

Saudi Arabia also condemned the attack on the UAE consulate building in the KRG region.

In a statement, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced the targeting of the diplomatic facility “in the strongest terms.”

The ministry highlighted the importance of the inviolability of diplomatic missions and said repeated attacks on diplomatic buildings constitute a clear violation of international norms and laws, including the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949.
