A 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck the Mediterranean Sea on Wednesday evening, Türkiye's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported.
The quake hit at 8:11 p.m. local time at a depth of 38.1 kilometers, according to AFAD data. The epicenter was recorded at coordinates 35.193 degrees north latitude and 22.678 degrees east longitude, placing it in the eastern Mediterranean.
At 38.1 kilometers, the earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth. Seismologists generally classify quakes shallower than 70 kilometers as shallow-focus events, which can produce stronger ground shaking at the surface relative to their magnitude. However, a 4.7-magnitude event is typically considered moderate, and no reports of damage or casualties were included in AFAD's initial announcement.
