U.S. President Donald Trump telephoned Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday as Erdogan hosted an evening dinner for visiting leaders ahead of the Organization of Turkic States summit, and he wished the gathering success.

The call came on Oct. 29, Türkiye’s Republic Day, as the leaders sat down together. Erdogan relayed greetings from the leaders at the table to Trump, according to the account provided.

Erdogan told Trump that the organization’s 13th summit would be held in Ankara.

He said the meeting would produce decisions to carry the group forward, describing it as an organization that has become “an address of stability and security” in Central Asia, with a population of more than 200 million.

Trump, in turn, conveyed his best wishes for the summit.

A dinner on Republic Day

Turkish media reported that Erdogan welcomed the guests at Bestepe, in the Presidential Complex area of Ankara, before the official dinner.

The leaders arrived at a nearby park in TOGG T10X vehicles, planted pine saplings and posed before replicas of the Orkhon Inscriptions, the eighth-century Turkic monuments in Mongolia.

Military bands and a flyover by the Turkish Air Force’s Turkish Stars aerobatic team were part of the program.

Among those reported at the dinner were Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus President Tufan Erhurman.

Azerbaijan was represented by Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, and Secretary General Kubanychbek Omuraliyev also attended. The date coincided with the 103rd anniversary of the founding of the Turkish Republic.

What is on the table

The leaders’ session is scheduled for Friday, under the theme “Turkic Century: Unity in Language, Thought and Action.” Turkish media reported that the leaders are expected to adopt a document called the Ankara Declaration, along with several cooperation decisions.

Reported topics include trade and investment, transport and energy links, digital transformation, cultural ties and strengthening the organization’s institutions, as well as the Turkic World 2040 Vision.

The rotating chairmanship of the organization is due to pass from Azerbaijan to Türkiye. In an interview with CNN Turk on Thursday, Omuraliyev said the organization’s motto is “Together we are stronger.” He said peace and stability are vital, and that regional conflicts, terrorism and extremism are regularly discussed at senior meetings.

The group began as the Cooperation Council of Turkic-Speaking States under the Nakhchivan Agreement, signed on Oct. 3, 2009. It was renamed the Organization of Turkic States at a 2021 summit in Istanbul, where it adopted the 2040 vision document. It is headquartered in Istanbul. Its members include Türkiye, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, while Hungary, Turkmenistan and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus take part as observers.

Turkish media reported that Japarov was to receive the Order of the Turkic World, and that Erdogan would also present him with the Ali-Shir Nava’i Award. The statement on the call did not say whether Trump and Erdogan discussed other topics.
