Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty stated that the cause of Lebanon's current tragedy is the "shameful failure" of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to stop the war in the Gaza Strip.

Abdelatty spoke at an emergency Lebanon session held at the United Nations Security Council, requested by France.

Abdelatty said, "What we are witnessing in Lebanon right now is a full-scale assault and a blatant violation of the sovereignty of a state that is a founding member of the United Nations."

The Egyptian minister noted that Israel’s attacks on Lebanon, in blatant violation of the U.N. Charter, international law, and international humanitarian law, have resulted in the deaths of hundreds, the injury of thousands, and the forced displacement of tens of thousands of Lebanese citizens.

Abdelatty emphasized that "the tragedy Lebanon is currently experiencing is an inevitable result of the U.N. Security Council's shameful failure to fulfill its responsibility to stop the war that has been ongoing in the Gaza Strip for a year."

The minister warned that the violence witnessed in Gaza over the past year, and now in Lebanon, is likely to spread to other parts of the region if the international community fails to fulfill its responsibility to stop Israel’s attacks.

Abdelatty stressed that it is no longer acceptable for the UNSC to continue failing to fully implement Resolution 1701. He called for an immediate and unconditional end to Israel’s violations of Lebanese territory and airspace.

He also pointed out that achieving full stability in the Middle East depends, above all, on the full and immediate implementation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 2735 and the cessation of the war in Gaza. Abdulati warned that without stopping the massacre in Gaza, the region would remain stuck in a cycle of temporary cease-fires that would soon collapse.
