The top diplomats of Egypt and Iran met in Cairo on Tuesday to discuss bilateral relations and Tehran’s nuclear program, officials said.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in the Egyptian capital early Tuesday for a one-day visit for talks with senior officials. He shared a photo of his meeting with his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty, but did not disclose details.

An Egyptian Foreign Ministry statement said the two ministers discussed ways to bolster ties and reviewed the latest developments regarding Iran’s nuclear file. The Iranian Foreign Ministry added that Araghchi would also meet Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi during his trip.

IAEA chief also in Cairo

Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported that Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), was also in Cairo for talks aimed at finalizing a new framework for cooperation between Iran and the agency.

On Saturday, Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Reza Najafi, confirmed that Tehran had resumed negotiations with the U.N. nuclear watchdog.

Iran suspended cooperation with the IAEA following U.S. and Israeli attacks earlier this year, accusing the agency of bias.

Tehran had been engaged in Oman-mediated nuclear talks with Washington when Israel launched a surprise attack on June 13, striking military, nuclear, and civilian sites, as well as senior commanders and nuclear scientists.

Iran responded with missile and drone strikes, while the United States bombed three Iranian nuclear facilities. The 12-day conflict ended under a U.S.-sponsored ceasefire that took effect June 24.
