Hakan Fidan, Türkiye’s Foreign Minister, met yesterday in New Alamein City with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, in the presence of Dr. Badr Abdel Aaty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration, and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs.
The visit came following Foreign Minister Fidan's official reception by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi in Cairo, as confirmed by the Turkish Foreign Ministry.
The diplomatic engagement reflected broader regional discussions, with plans for additional meetings within both the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Arab League to address Gaza-related issues.
Hakan Fidan’s most recent visit to Egypt was on March 23, when he attended a Contact Group meeting on Gaza organized by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the Arab League.
Meanwhile, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aaty visited Turkey on February 4.
Fidan’s visit to Egypt comes following the Israeli government’s approval of a plan to occupy the remaining parts of the Gaza Strip.
Several Egyptian media outlets have characterized the meeting as a significant political development and a step toward closer bilateral relations. The meeting is viewed as particularly important in light of recent positive progress in Egyptian-Turkish relations over the past two years, coinciding with the Egyptian Foreign Ministry’s formal rejection of the Israeli cabinet’s decision concerning the occupation of the Gaza Strip.
Dr. Mohamed Haroun, Secretary of the Foreign Relations Committee of the “Al-Masryeen” party, praised the important meeting, emphasizing that it continues the positive momentum in Cairo-Ankara relations. He noted that the meeting lays a solid foundation for a new phase of regional cooperation and reflects Egypt’s pivotal role as a supporter of stability and peace. It also highlights Egypt’s commitment to building balanced partnerships with various regional powers to serve the interests of peoples and enhance security and development across the region.
Meanwhile, Dr. Sama Suleiman, Deputy Chair of the Foreign, Arab, and African Affairs Committee in the Senate and Political Secretary of the Homeland Protectors Party, stated that Fidan’s visit comes at a critical time and reflects a strategic shift in bilateral relations. She explained that the visit crowns a process of rebuilding trust between Cairo and Ankara, confirming both parties’ seriousness in launching a new phase of regional and international cooperation, especially amid challenges facing the region, including developments in Gaza, Libya, and the Eastern Mediterranean.
Some media figures have called for the improvement in Egypt-Turkey relations to serve as a starting point for enhanced security cooperation, including the extradition of individuals affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood who are legally wanted in Egypt, as part of ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and ensure regional security and stability.
The diplomatic meeting underscored growing regional coordination against Israeli actions in Gaza. Egyptian Foreign Minister Abdelatty confirmed that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza dominated discussions with his Turkish counterpart.
"The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza was the main topic of Foreign Minister Fidan's meeting," Abdelatty said, adding that Egypt and Türkiye were in agreement on condemning the occupation and expansion of control over Gaza.
