Egypt has reportedly begun preparations for potential military action in response to mass displacement from Gaza, an Egyptian military official told Hezbollah-affiliated Al Akhbar, according to a Jerusalem Post report on Saturday.
The official indicated that measures could include increasing troop presence in the Sinai Peninsula and deploying additional weapons and aircraft, describing the actions as intended to “deter Tel Aviv.”
He stressed that any contingency plan would strictly follow humanitarian guidelines: “Instructions … include refraining from firing on Palestinians approaching the border and handling the situation exclusively in accordance with humanitarian standards.” The official further described the displacement toward the border as a direct threat to Egypt’s national security, requiring a military posture different from the current one.
Egypt has expressed its concerns to U.S. officials regarding repeated Israeli claims that drones are being used to smuggle weapons to Hamas via Egyptian territory.
Egyptian authorities have rejected these allegations, underscoring ongoing coordination with both Israel and the United States.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty previously warned that the large-scale displacement of Palestinians from Gaza City constitutes a “red line.” “We will not accept it, we will not participate in it, and we will not allow it to happen,” he stated, adding that Cairo is working through multiple channels to mitigate the humanitarian impact on Palestinians.
