The National Election Authority in Egypt announced Tuesday the annulment of results for individual seats in 19 districts during the first phase of the 2025 parliamentary elections, after identifying “fundamental flaws” that affected voting and counting processes in several governorates.

The authority’s chairman, Hazem Badawi, said elections in those districts will be held at a later date.

The decision came a day after President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi urged the National Election Authority not to hesitate in canceling the vote—whether entirely or partially—if it proved impossible to determine voters’ true will.

President calls for transparency

In a post on the platform X, Sisi stressed that incidents reported in some individual-seat districts fall solely under the review of the independent authority.

He called for careful examination of complaints and enhanced transparency to ensure genuine representation of voters.

Sisi also called on the authority to disclose the actions taken regarding violations in electoral campaigning to prevent their repetition in the remaining stages.

Egyptians voted in the first phase of the elections Nov. 10–11 across 14 governorates, with the contest conducted under both closed-list party systems and individual seats.

Several individual-seat candidates reported problems in vote counting that affected the results.

The second and final phase of the parliamentary elections is scheduled for Nov. 24–25 in 13 governorates.
